In California
We recommend a visit to the Inyo National Forest. Stop at the beautiful visitors center at Mammoth Lake or in Lee Vining for additional details on the wildlife that you can expect to see in the area. Deer and bear sightings are common in this area. Talk to your camp host for current sighting information and to receive our handout on "bear awareness".

In Colorado
Sightings of Rocky Mountain elk and deer are common in the forests across Colorado. If you are planning a trip, we highly recommend the Chalk Creek Drainage near Salida for Rocky Mountain Sheep sightings. We recommend Mt. Princeton, Chalk Lake or Cascade campgrounds for the Chalk Creek drainage. For those traveling in mid to late summer your chances of sighting a Black Bear or very good in the vicinity of O’Haver Lake, Mt. Princeton, Chalk Lake, Cascade, Iron City or Collegiate Peaks. Keep in mind that animals in the wild can be dangerous. When camping within Colorado all foodstuffs must be stored within your RV or vehicle at night and when you are not physically present.

In Texas
The Lake McClellan Recreation Area is considered a prime bird watching area. Many species of migratory birds stop at Lake McClellan to rest and restore their energy before continuing their journey. In fact, Rocky Mountain Recreation is helping to nominate the Lake McClellan Recreation Area as a site for "The Great Texas Birding Trails" project. The south side facilities are closed during the winter months to protect critical Bald Eagle habitat. These magnificent birds can be seen from the north shore facilities. Other birds that frequent the area are Mississippi Kites, Rio Grande turkeys and Bobwhite quail. Many eastern and western songbirds overlap ranges here. You are encouraged to bring your field glasses for maximum viewing enjoyment.

In Nevada
Early summer drives through the Lamoille Canyon can offer views and photographic opportunities of Rocky Mountain Sheep. Stay in nearby Thomas Canyon Campground so that you can catch the first rays of sunlight as they illuminate the canyon walls. Near by, Ruby Marsh offers splendid bird watching opportunities. Stay at South Ruby Campground for the convenience of both early and late day viewing opportunities. Staying at the Big Bend Campground can afford the opportunity to catch a glimpse of large wildlife, such as Deer, Elk, or Antelope.
